Tobey Maguire was born June 27, 1975 in Santa Monica, California. At the time of his birth his hard working unwed parents were 18 and 20. His mother, Wendy, was a secretary
and his father, Vincent, was a cook. His parents had married and divorced, all within two years of his birth.
Maguire originally wanted to be a chef, but turned to acting after his mother
offered him $100 to take drama rather than home economics in high school. In 1987 he began studying acting at thesuggestion of neighbor, an entertainment manager. Maguire started out in show biz
doing commercials and one-line parts. One of Tobey's first big breaks was landing the lead role in the short lived sitcom Great Scott! when he was 17. He then took a big step and landed a small part in
the critically acclaimed "This Boy's Life", which launched the career of his good friend - Leonardo DiCaprio.
It wasn't until he landed a supporting role as Kate Capshaw's son in
Griffin Dunne's "Duke of Groove" that he achieved recognition and better roles. The film received an Oscar nomination which kicked Maguire's career into high gear. After years of small roles
that got him nowhere, Tobey was finally cast in movies where he could be his awkward self, and they worked. He grabbed everyone's attention in "The Ice Storm", "Deconstructing Harry"
and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vagas", as well as widened his scope in his ability to act. In 1998 he worked on two films, one a short film called "Don's Plum" which landed in court
and may never be seen in North America. He and Leonardo DiCaprio sued R.D. Robb for trying to release "Don's Plum", an independent film that dealt with "uncomfortable topics," and
was never meant to be released as a full length feature. The scandal served to put Tobey Maguire in the headlines, and it also linked him with DiCaprio in the mind of his fans. The publicity surrounding
the film provided Maguire with much needed press coverage and the resulting publicity has made him a hot commodity.
Tobey Maguire's past two years have proved to be very successful. He appeared
in 1999's "Ride With the Devil" which costarred Jewel, and also starred in "The Cider House Rules" in the same year. The movie "The Cider House Rules" was a huge success
receiving nominations for 7 Academy Awards including Best Picture, winning 2 of the awards (Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor). 2000 seen him acting with Michael Douglas in
"Wonderboys," and in 2001 he appeared as the comic book hero Spiderman in the hugely successful film.
In 2003 he portrayed a half-blind jockey in in the real-life story "Seabiscuit" and in 2004 followed up with another blockbuster in "Spider-Man II".
Tobey enjoys the tofu and
yoga-exercising. He lives in Los Angeles when not on location.
